A New Galesburg Store That's Pretty Sweet
A Galesburg woman who says she's always wanted to go into business for herself now has that chance, and in what she hopes is a prime location.

Sherry Reed celebrated the grand opening of her new store, "Sweets" on South Seminary Street near the Simmons Street intersection on Friday. For now, Reed says her candy shop will be open 10 a-m to 8 p-m Monday through Saturday, and 10 to 6 on Sundays.

Reed tells WGIL she's only been working on opening her own store for a few months now, but it certainly hasn't all been smooth sailing. "Just a lot of paperwork," Reed said. "I'd gotten kind of discouraged and I just picked myself back up and keep going and getting through all of the projections, the business plan (and) all that kind of stuff."

Reed does say she credits Cat Garza and the staff of the Galesburg Entrepreneurship Center with helping her get through that business plan, and she tells WGIL getting a Business Innovation Grant from the city was quite a relief, too.

"We were gonna go through with it and that just kind of helped encouragement of it and so forth," Reed said. "It helped out a lot on purchasing things to help us out with equipment and so forth like that."

Reed was a manager for a convenience store chain prior to opening up Sweets.

Her store has a selection of chocolate and other candy, a soda fountain serving ice cream, shakes, and malts, and also Amish-made preserves and pie fillings.

Reed says if business goes well, she'll look into even longer hours.
