Durbin Says Senate Will Debate Health Care
The U.S. Senate is the next stop for the health care overhaul that narrowly passed the House of Representatives over the weekend.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says the Senate faces several tricky questions, such as a public option, employer mandates, an opt-out provision for states, and whether abortion can be covered. He says he will not stake his vote yes or no to any single issue, because achieving a reform that extends coverage to people who don't have it is his goal.

Durbin says the Senate will get the bill in about a week, begin debate before Thanksgiving and try to finish by the end of the year.

The House version of the bill includes a provision for the government to sell insurance, and bars the government from covering abortions. The House version also would require most Americans to carry insurance, provide subsidies to those who can't afford it, and require large companies to offer coverage to their employees.
