Galesburg School District Wants to Buy Former Store
A piece of property owned by one of Galesburg's two hospitals that's located next to a Galesburg elementary school may become school district property after Monday night.

The Galesburg School Board will consider a recommendation to purchase the former Giant Foods store at Fremont and Seminary Streets.

The building is currently owned by Tennessee-based Community Health Systems, the parent company of Galesburg Cottage Hospital, and was most recently occupied by Midwest Regional Home Care before their move last month to 799 North Henderson Street.

The building is currently for sale, District-205 says, and is listed at $450,000 - nearly half of what it was most recently appraised for.

District officials say under a deal worked out, they would pay $200,000, with C-H-S gifting the remaining $250,000.

Documents provided to the Galesburg School Board indicate that the district wants to look at using the former store as some sort of classroom space, possibly in order to help space at Silas Willard Elementary School.
