Galesburg Honors Veterans -- STORY AND PHOTOS HERE
POSTED 7:20 p-m 11/8/09 Mother Nature apparently had one more spectacular day in reserve, and she let it out as Galesburg paid tribute to America's heroes.

People lined the streets of the city's downtown area on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon to take in the 9th Annual Veterans Parade, which was led by the American Legion Color Guard. Several veterans organizations, the Patriot Guard Riders, the Galesburg High School Marching Streaks, the Costa Catholic Academy marching band and the Monmouth College Pipe Band were among the dozens of entries.

This year's parade grand marshals represented three generations of veterans: Sgt. Robert "Grandpa" Robison, his son PFC Timothy Robison and Sgt. Robison's grandson, Pvt. Devon Austin. There was also a bomber plane flyover by Mike Godsil and the Galesburg area's nine Gold Star familes were represented.

A ceremony followed on the Knox County Courthouse grounds. Tammy McCulloch, Wolf Den Leader of Bethel Baptist Cub Scouts Pack 317, talked about the history of Veterans Day. Her scouts gave out Medallion Heroism Awards to veterans at the ceremony.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Hummel of the Illinois Army National Guard also spoke.

Organizers say the parade and ceremony were to honor all veterans, past and present.
