Utility Urges Use of Energy-Saving Holiday Lights
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- It's that time of year when people start thinking about getting holiday lights off their shelves and onto their houses.

One Illinois utility says it's also the right time to think about whether your lights are energy efficient.

Ameren Illinois says light strings featuring LED technology use 75 percent less electricity than conventional incandescent lights.

It recommends lights approved by a federal program called ENERGY STAR that seeks to protect the environment through energy efficiency.

Ameren says that if all holiday light strings sold in the U.S. this year were the energy efficient variety, electricity usage would fall by more than 2 billion kilowatt-hours. That's equivalent to the annual electricity usage of more than 190,000 single family homes.
