State Begins Releasing Inmates Early
Gov. Pat Quinn is defending his plan that has begun setting non-violent prison inmates free.

The governor says under state law, inmates can be released up to a year before their scheduled release date. He says in these hard financial times, the move is something that many other states are doing at as well.

Quinn was asked about concerns that those released inmates would have a tough time finding jobs, given the poor economy. He says there are state programs that provide assistance to those released inmates, and also touted his capital plan as part of putting them to work.

"I believe in using public works to get people back to work," Quinn said. "We're gonna be building and making a lot of things in Illinois on behalf of the public; things like schools and roads and bridges and water systems and rail systems and so as we hopefully jumpstart our economy, we can have employment for all."

The Illinois Department of Corrections began releasing inmates Tuesday and the process will continue over several weeks, Quinn says. He adds that Illinois is releasing only 1,000 inmates, far fewer than other states.
