Aldermen Questioned Hotel/Motel Tax Use During Recent Budget Session
The Galesburg City Council used a council work session on the city's annual property tax levy request to question the city's finance director on money that has nothing to do with property taxes.

Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen, with the backing he says of other aldermen, asked City Finance Director Gloria Osborn recently about making a separate line in the city's budget for hotel/motel tax dollars, he said, so aldermen could track where that money goes better than they already do.

Osborn told aldermen making the change is easier said than done.

"We use the Hotel/Motel tax for the General Fund operations," Osborn said. "Actually, part of that tax goes to the Orpheum (Theatre), and part of that tax also goes to the Tourism Council. If you're wanting to put it in a special revenue fund, we would have to have some kind of resolution as to why you want to use it; because, with accounting standards, we have to have some kind of a requirement for it."

In other words, Aldermen would have to have a resolution crafted that they'd have to vote on in order for that change to take place. Allen never specifically said why he wanted hotel/motel tax money to be voted on separately.

And before last week, another aldermen said Allen had only discussed the matter briefly with him.

But Allen said getting a resolution crafted wouldn't be a problem.
