Monmouth-Roseville Audit Lists Common Problems
The audit of the finances of the Monmouth-Roseville School District has uncovered problems the district has likely seen before.

Monmouth Mayor Rod Davies is also the auditor of the school district through his Monmouth accounting firm, and presented his report to the District-238 board Tuesday night. Davies says many of the issues that would come up with any audit report -- like the fact that there aren't enough people doing separate functions with the district's books. He says that's just not practical, but something the state takes note of anyway.

Davies also told board members, however, another item that has come up in the audit came up again this year.

"It relates to the district expenditures exceeding the approved budget in three funds," Davies said. "This is also a repeat finding from the prior year. They were over budget in the Education Fund, Tort, and Fire Prevention & Safety."

Davies also made note of a new audit requirement that took a look at some inconsistencies in personnel files, mostly related to drug-free work place policies and other various employment forms, made necessary by the district's receipt of federal economic stimulus funds.

The audit also accused two board members of not filing the required economic interest statements in time, something district officials say they'll work more closely with the board members on in the future.
