District 217 Board Approves 2010 Tax Levy
The Abingdon School District is seeking more money from the taxpayers next fiscal year but the likelihood is the tax rate won't change much, if at all.

The District 217 School Board Wednesday night approved the 2010 levy with a 5-0 vote. The total levy request of nearly $2.8 million dollars is about $276,000 more than the previous year. It's based on a projected equalized assessed valuation of $46 million.

Superintendent Tami Roskamp is asking for $1.5 million for the education fund to pay salaries and benefits, an increase of $136,325. She says insurance is expected to go up between 10 and 25 percent next year. Other increases are noted in IMRF and utilities.

Roskamp says the big unknown is what EAV will actually be. "Overall last year I asked for $6.04 (per $100 of EAV), we got $5.96 (and) I anticipate about the same this time" Roskamp said.

Roskamp says other schools are estimating a 7 to 10 percent increase in EAV. Last year's EAV was about $42 million.

The board held a Truth in Taxation hearing before Wednesday night's meeting because the levy request is more than five percent of the previous year's levy. There were no public comments during the hearing.
