Illinois On Pace for Significant Decline in Traffic Deaths
Illinois is on pace to have fewer than 1,000 traffic deaths this year. As of Tuesday, the number was 781 -- that's 102 fewer than the same time in 2008.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police are putting on a campaign called "Save 100"; that is, to end 2009 with at least 100 fewer fatalities than the number in 2008, which was 1,043.

IDOT traffic safety director Mike Stout says the National Safety Council estimates the average cost of a traffic fatality is more than $1 million, considering such factors as medical bills and lost income.
