U of I Committee Starts Presidential Search
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- University of Illinois trustees have named a 19-member committee to search for a new university president.

President B. Joseph White will step down at the end of the year following revelations the Urbana-Champaign campus admitted students with political connections over better-qualified applicants.

Trustees plan to choose a president by July from candidates picked by the committee.

The committee includes trustees Pamela B. Strobel, Karen Hasara and Carlos Tortolero; professors from each of the university's three campuses, including May Berenbaum, Ollie Watts Davis and Matthew Wheeler.

Dr. Joseph A. Flaherty, who is dean of the UIC College of Medicine; a student from each campus; other administrators and an alumni representative are also on the committee.
