State to Poison Canal to Fight Asian Carp
CHICAGO (AP) -- State officials say they plan to dump a potent fish-killing poison called Rotenone into a stretch of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal next month in a last-ditch attempt to keep Asian carp from reaching Lake Michigan.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced Friday it will dump the Rotenone into the canal between Romeoville and the Lockport Dam after closing that stretch to boat traffic.

Before the poison is applied, crews will use electrodes to shock fish to the surface and identify sport fish that can be safely relocated.

Asian carp have moved up the Mississippi and Illinois rivers during the past 15 years, and are now threatening to enter the great lakes, where they are considered a serious threat to the region's $4.5 billion sport fishing industry.
