One-Room Fulton County School Named to Historic Registry
LEWISTOWN, Ill. (AP) -- A one-room schoolhouse on the Dickson Mounds Museum property may be making its way onto the National Register of Historic Places.

The Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council has voted to approve adding the East Rutherford School to the national register and has sent its recommendation to the National Park Service, which will have the final decision.

The school, which was built in 1907, is already being used to show students and other visitors what education was like during the early part of the 20th Century.

Museum officials say it was one of the first schools built after a school construction reform movement.

The improvements at the East Rutherford School included solid brick construction instead of wood, coal furnaces for heat, bathrooms, and basements and coat rooms for more space.
