School Bus Safety Law Signed
Legislation has been signed into law that improves school bus safety.

The new law requires all school bus drivers to inspect the bus after each trip to ensure that children are not left unattended on a bus. The law also requires all school buses in Illinois to be equipped with a two-way radio system.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says his office will be in charge of enforcement. Failure to conduct a post-trip bus inspection can result in the driver's permit being suspended by White's office. A spokesman for White says the law puts the burden on the bus company to notify White's office.

The bill was sponsored by State Sen. James DeLeo (D-Chicago) and State Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago).

The law is effective immediately.
