Durbin Argues In Favor of Thomson on Senate Floor
Illinois' senior U. S. senator is arguing on the Senate floor for turning the largely unused Thomson Correctional Center in northwestern Illinois into a prison to house inmates now at Guantanamo Bay.

U. S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) used his seven-minute speech Tuesday not only to tout the economic benefits for that part of the state, but also to turn back some Republican arguments against the possible move. Durbin says a military prison at Thomson would be "virtually the most secure prison in America today," adding there's never been an escape from a "supermax" facility. Durbin adds that the detainees would not be allowed to receive visitors, nor would they be released into the U. S. population.

Detractors have suggested otherwise, adding that the proposal would make both Chicago -- with its major airport and the continent's tallest building -- and the village of Thomson vulnerable to terrorism.
