FIRST ON WGIL: Money Situation Not Bad, But Not Great, in Galesburg School District
The Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations in the Galesburg School District says the money situation right now isn't the best it could be -- but then again, it isn't the worst either.

Guy Cahill told the District-205 Board's Budget Committee Tuesday that spending on salaries is currently down compared to last year, and some operating expenses are also down. That's all as of the first quarter of the fiscal year, which ended in September.

But Cahill says the district's projected fund balance of $12.5 million is about $300,000 lower than projected, but now isn't quite the time to worry.

"We're not quite running where we projected, but...we don't seem to be in any trouble," Cahill said. "It's just that it could have been, maybe should have been better, from a cash flow standpoint."

Cahill says there are still concerns, as every school district has, about just how timely the state will be paying its state aid and other bills to local school districts given their own budget crisis.

In the meantime, Cahill says he's looking for any way possible to save the district money by reducing spending, and is going line by line in the budget to do so.
