FIRST ON WGIL: Copiers Could Be a Key to District 205 Cost Savings
Office supplies might end up being one of the main ways the Galesburg School District is able to save some money in what otherwise could be a tough budget period.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill told the school board's Budget Committee Tuesday bids have come back on the proposed lease of a new set of copy machines -- this, following the district's current lease expiring back in January.

Cahill told committee members just by signing a new copier lease, based on the lowest bid, could cut the district's copier budget in half.

"The base bid translates into an annual expense of $111,000. Right now, we're paying $210,000 for two fewer machines -- for two fewer machines, and 3,000,000 fewer copies a year."

Cahill says those bids will be brought to the District-205 board for approval next month. But he says the bigger point is that by identifying savings like that across the budget, that money can either simply be saved, or put toward spending that will be needed later down the road, for example, as the district continues embarking on a 20-year master facilities maintenance plan.

Cahill also told the budget committee that revenues are slightly ahead of the district's projections so far this year, while expenses are slightly down.
