|Warren County Veteran Wins State Award
|A United States Navy Veteran and a Monmouth resident has received the November award for Veteran of the Month in the State of Illinois.
Cheri Stanton is Commander of Monmouth's American Legion Post 136, and received the award today Wednesday from Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Dan Grant.
Stanton served in the Navy from 1967 to 1969 working in Air Operations processing flight plans. She later became a school teacher following her military service and retired earlier this year after 34 years of service to the Monmouth-Roseville School District.
Grant tells WGIL it's people like Stanton who make him proud to be part of a program like the Illinois Veteran of the month.
"We're here to honor people for not only making the decision to serve, to protect their country, to put their country before themselves, but for people who've really made that a part of their life and continue to serve for, in this case, 40 years with Cheri -- 40 years after service, still serving our country, still serving those who do serve," Grant said.
Grant says Stanton is a valued asset to Warren County residents.
Stanton is chair of the state's children and youth programs for the American Legion and works with Operation Military Kids. She spearheaded The Pillowcase Project which makes pictured pillowcases for deployed troops and their children.
She says it's a proud day for her and says she thanks both her family and all the people who help her behind the scenes with her many projects.
