Sears Narrows 3Q Loss On Cost-Cutting Efforts
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) -- Sears Holdings posted a smaller third-quarter loss Thursday.

The Hoffman Estates-based retailer has been combating customers' continued desire to spend money elsewhere with tighter inventory management and cost control efforts.

The company recently launched a major campaign to win over holiday shoppers -- with measures like its new Christmas Club cash savings card good at Sears and Kmart stores, both of which have locations in Galesburg.

Sears lost $127 million for the period ended Oct. 31. That compares with a loss of $146 million a year earlier.

The loss was the second consecutive quarterly deficit as Sears lost $94 million in the second quarter.

Sears Holdings has about 3,900 full-line and specialty retail stores in the U.S. and Canada.
