Orpheum's Educational Program Kicks Off Big
FIRST REPORTED: 2:00pm 11/19/09 The Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg has seen its biggest attendance yet for an event that's part of a special series of educational shows the facility puts on every year.

Theatre president Kate Francis says the first of its series of "Lights! Camera! Learn!" shows for the current academic year was Wednesday. The series featured a musical performance based on the book "Jigsaw Jones: the Case of the Class Clown."

Francis told the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board Wednesday that performance was a huge draw for the theatre.

"We had over 770 (students) at the 10:00 (Wednesday morning) show, and over 540 at the 1:00 show. So, over 1,300 kids came through," Francis said.

Francis says that includes some first-time schools participating, one from as far away as the Kewanee School District in Henry County.

Francis says there were only three shows in the annual series targeting first through third graders planned this year, but says a special targeting a different group has been added. "We have added a fourth program," Francis said. "In April, 2010, the Orpheum Theatre and Prairie Players Civic Theatre are collaborating on offering 'The Crucible' -- a full-length production of 'The Crucible' for high school students."

That show, Francis says, will be in April 2010, and as is the case with the other shows in the series, will be free for the schools who participate.

The "Light! Camera! Learn!" series is grant funded.
