IDOT Talks Salt Supply
Time to pass the salt - and get ready to spread it on the road! The Illinois Department of Transportation, in its annual winter driving announcement, says it will have more than 3,900 employees and 1,900 pieces of equipment at the ready for snow and ice removal. In a news release, IDOT says it spent $82.3 million on snow removal, using 836,000 man-hours and almost 500,000 tons of salt last fiscal year.

Roger Driskell, deputy director of IDOT, told reporters at the agency's Riverton operations yard near Springfield that even though prices have stabilized, crews will be trained as to how to use salt most judiciously, including when it’s too cold to be effective.

State Police Lt. Rick Hector says drivers should remember three things: slow down, slow down, slow down. He adds that during wintry conditions, if you see a State Police car driving on the interstate at 45 mph, that is a clue you should drive 45 mph as well.
