Concerns Continue at State Supermax Prison
Although things are improving at Tamms Supermax Correctional Center, there is still some concern that those employed there are overworked.

Eddie Caumiant, regional director for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union Council 31, says the biggest complaint from corrections officers and others that work at the prison are the long hours.

"We have been undefended in this state for decades, but certainly in this last decade," Caumiant said at Tamms. "We've lost 25 percent of the state work force in the decade with absolutely no replacements so we're doing a whole lot more work with very, very few resources."

Caumiant says he agrees with Gov. Pat Quinn that a tax increase is necessary in order to fully staff state prisons. The increase would also help pay a backlog of bills the state has accumulated.

Many outside groups have also raised concerns that overworked guards could present a security issue.
