Downtown Businesses Start Holiday Season
Galesburg businesses are ready to kick off the holiday season, and they're doing so a bit earlier than they have before.

The Galesburg Business Association is hosting its annual Holiday Open House Saturday from 10 a-m until 3 p-m, moved up from the first weekend of December to the weekend before Thanksgiving to hopefully seize on some potentially better weather. Numerous downtown businesses will be open, and G-B-A president Dennis Case says the possibility will exist for patrons to win a $1,000 dollar shopping spree at them.

Case tells W-G-I-L once you get downtown to start your holiday shopping, you won't even need to drive anymore. "What we have there is free carriage rides from the front of 102 East Main and that will have about a six-block radius," Case said. "It'll go from Cherry Street to Seminary, then up Seminary to Simmons, and down Simmons to Cherry, then back in front of 102 (East Main) again."

Case says once again this year, 19 downtown businesses will also be part of a game of "Bingo" of sorts, where a game card can be picked up then stamped by each business in order for the holder to be eligible for prizes. That's in addition to decorated business windows.

On Sunday, Case says, will be the annual holiday parade taking the usual route through downtown Galesburg that starts at 2 p-m, immediately following the rooftop rescue of Santa Claus at 1:15.
