Kirk: Detainees in Thomson "Unnecessary Risk"
CHICAGO (AP) -- Republican Congressman Mark Kirk is standing by his claims that moving Guantanamo Bay detainees to a prison in northwestern Illinois would be an "unnecessary risk."

But Kirk says he understands when a deal "has been cut." And he says, if a deal is to move forward, he wants some questions answered by Gov. Pat Quinn and the Obama administration.

Kirk and other Republican members of Congress from Illinois have a list of questions that include: Where would trials for the detainees be held? And would detainees leave prison for local hospitals to get medical care?

Thomson is the latest location to be considered as the Obama administration looks for a place to relocate the detainees.

President Barack Obama wants to close the military-run detention center in Cuba.

Kirk is one of the Republicans running for Obama's old Senate seat in next year's election.
