City Council to Discuss Quiet Zones Monday Night
Eight different rail road crossings in Galesburg could be closer to being closed, and the rails in those areas much closer to being quiet, following a special meeting of the Galesburg City Council Monday night.

Aldermen are scheduled to hold a special meeting starting at 6pm Monday at the Galesburg Public Library on the city's efforts to get "Quiet Zones" designated in the city.

The city has already held special meetings and public hearings on the proposals, and officials say efforts have been undertaken recently with Burlington Northern Santa Fe to get them to pay for at least part of the over two-million dollar project to make the closures and designations happen.

They say that a combination of money from Galesburg's largest employer and from the Illinois Commerce Commission will result in a little more than half the money needed, with the city footing the rest -- all if approved.

The I.C.C. and the railroad are expected at the meeting, and the city says they want the public there as well to provide their input.

The meeting will be held in the Galesburg Public Library's Sanderson Room.
