State Police Again Issue Seatbelt Reminders
An official with one Illinois State Police District says there hasn't been a Thanksgiving Day traffic fatality there in years, and he wants to keep it that way.

District-14 trooper Todd Adkisson says in the five counties that comprise that district -- Warren, Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, and McDonough, the last time a fatality was recorded on the roads there during the Thanksgiving holiday was 2006. He and other troopers will continue to be fanned out over the next several days providing heavy enforcement to make sure motorists are wearing their seatbelts and, with some expected snow in the forecast, driving safely.

Adkisson tells W-G-I-L while it's important for troopers to do special enforcement details for things like seatbelts, he thinks the public is just becoming more alert, especially if statistics are any indication.

"Our DUI's, for example, from last year to this year, this year we've had 203 DUI arrests, compared to last year when we had 191. Our occupant restraint arrests, right now, are down from last year, however they are only down slightly. We only have 38 patrol days left for this year."

Adkisson says among other statistics from enforcement efforts, arrests for Illegal Transportation of Alcohol, and drug-related arrests are both up.

Nevertheless, he says it's still extremely crucial to drive with caution, and wear your seatbelt.
