Illinois Releases Deer Harvest First Weekend Numbers
Illinois hunters bagged fewer deer -- compared to opening weekend last year -- in the first three days of firearm deer season. The Department of Natural Resources says the total was 66,126 for Nov. 20-22. Last year's first three days harvested 71,894.

DNR spokesman Tim Schweizer says a big reason is the delay in the corn harvest. The more tall corn there is, the harder it is for hunters to find deer.

Schweizer says the state is hoping to do better during the second weekend of the season, Dec. 3-6. "Hunters are the most important component in deer herd management. We need hunters in the field every fall taking deer," he says.

The seven-day total in 2008 was 106,018.

The top counties for the opening weekend were Pike, Fulton, Adams, Jefferson, and Randolph, each with more than 1,500 deer harvested.
