Harvest Remained Slow Last Week
More cold, wet weather left nearly every combine in Illinois out of the fields. That's whey the crop harvest numbers have barely moved since last week. The corn harvest is only 19 percent complete, compared with 14 percent last week, and compared to last year's 63 percent and the 86 percent five-year average.

Soybeans are now 35 percent harvested, barely up from last week's 33 percent, and compared to 88 percent at this time last year and the 92 percent five-year average.

Mark Schleusener, USDA crop statistician, says since 1940, this corn harvest is the third slowest corn harvest, and the slowest since 1967. He says the soybean harvest is the second slowest on record at this point, and the slowest since 1941. He points out that this comparison is being made with years when farmers used horses, not machinery, accentuating how slow this year's harvest is.
