Emerald Ash Borer Found in Oak Forest
OAK FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities say the tree-killing emerald ash borer has made its way to the Chicago suburb of Oak Forest.

Joe Petrizzo, Oak Forest's superintendent of streets for the public works department and a certified arborist, said a property manager for an apartment complex called him last week to come and look at a sick tree at the complex.

Petrizzo said he noticed an abundance of woodpecker holes, which would indicate that the birds were feeding on something in the wood. When he cut open a branch he found larvae.

The Department of Agriculture says the larvae feed and bore through the inner bark of a tree, disrupting the flow of water and nutrients.

The beetle, which is native to Asia, was unknown in the U.S. until 2002.
