Holiday Shopping the Swedish Way
While many either have or will be rushing to the malls and shopping centers around the area over the next couple weeks starting Friday, an historic area community offers a unique chance to shop and learn some history.

The Bishop Hill State Historic Site in Henry County is hosting its annual "Julmarknad" starting Friday and running through Sunday, and running again next Saturday and Sunday.

Bishop Hill State Historic Site Superintendent Martha Downey tells WGIL Julmarknad is steeped in tradition.

"This hearkens back to medieval days, where, at the holiday time, people would come into the villages with their wares and items for people to purchase, and set up kind of like a market -- an outdoor market," Downey said. "Obviously, in Illinois, at this time of year, it's not pleasant enough outside to set up outside, so we do everything indoors."

Downey says in addition to the village's businesses having special items for sale, there will be a Cookie Walk, traditional Swedish folk characters like a Christmas gnome, and even a Lionel Train display.

She says there will also be live entertainment as well. Julmarknad runs from 10am to 5pm each day.
