Galesburg Unemployment Hits 11.5%
The unemployment rates for the city of Galesburg and Knox County as a whole have hit another negative milestone.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says figures released Wednesday indicate both jobless figures are now over 11%. The state says Galesburg's unemployment rate for October stands at 11.5%; that's up from a revised figure of 10.6% the month before.

Knox County unemployment rate as a whole is now at an even 11%, up from a revised 10.3% the month before.

In Warren County, state officials say the unemployment rate there continues to go up, but is still nowhere near double-digits. It's at 8.3% percent in October, up .3%

The state combines the Galesburg, Knox County, and Warren County numbers into what they call the Galesburg Micropolitan Statistical Area, and says that averages out to a 10.3% unemployment rate, up 0.6% from September.

In a statement, IDES Director Maureen O'Donnell says despite the fact that private economists are suggesting an economic recovery is in the offing, economies throughout Illinois will continue to be "challenged" long after that.

Of area jobless figures, only Henderson County saw an unemployment drop -- from a revised nine-point-three percent in September, to eight percent in October.
