Public Higher Education Failing Residents
The Illinois Policy Institute, a libertarian think tank, has issued a report on public higher education, and is not impressed with what it found. The title of the report is "Getting Less for More: A Report Card on Illinois State Higher Education."

The report gives the following grades:

General education -- F

Intellectual diversity -- F

Governance -- F

Cost and effectiveness -- F.

Colin Hitt, director of education issues for the IPI, says in-state tuition and fees have jumped by an average of 56 percent, yet the study found that many areas of higher education are flawed. For example, he says, no state university requires students to take courses in history, American government, literature or economics.

In the report are the results of a survey of students, which indicated that just over half of students asked say professors give personal political views in classrooms, and that 61 percent say some courses have readings that present only one side of an issue.

The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, which helped with the report, says it should be taken as a document that outlines places for improvement rather than an indictment of problems.
