Hynes Says He Would Sign State Campaign Finance Reform
State Comptroller Dan Hynes says if he was governor now, he would sign the campaign finance reform bill that came out of the General Assembly.

Hynes is running in the Democratic primary for governor, against Gov. Pat Quinn. Hynes says he would sign the measure setting contribution limits of $5,000 per person and $10,000 for corporations and unions to a single politician each year, which would be the first limits in Illinois history.

"The ethics legislation that went through the General Assembly and is now awaiting gubernatorial action I think takes additional positive steps towards reforming ethics laws and campaign finance laws in Illinois and I think we should make that legislation law," he said.

Hynes acknowledges that the measure does not go as far as he would like, but he says he's willing to make progress incrementally instead of seeing reform efforts stall entirely.

The measure has the imprimatur of some reform groups, while others say the bill is flawed because it doesn't limit the amount that political parties and legislative leaders can funnel to candidates.

The governor has said he looks forward to signing the bill, but he has allowed that he might make amendatory vetoes.
