Being a Teen is Hard
It's not your imagination -- being a teenager is tougher today than it was in Mom and Dad's day. The coordinator of a state program that provides services to Illinois youth through more than 100 community agencies says so.

"The environment that the kids are growing up in today is a lot different, and since the 80s, the family structure is different," says Dave Robisch, program coordinator for Teen REACH. "Things that are going on have changed drastically, and it's an intergenerational process that's going to take a lot of education and awareness and hard work."

Teen REACH (Responsibility, Education, Achievement, Caring and Hope) is part of the Illinois Department of Human Services. It recently put on a "Stop the Violence Summit" in each of four cities: Chicago, Champaign, Quincy, and Cairo. The program promotes education, mentoring, and healthy alternatives to children ages 6-17.
