Lake Storey Beach Hours Change
You won't have as many opportunities this coming summer to hit the beach in Galesburg -- assuming Mother Nature cooperates.

That's after the Galesburg City Council voted seven to one Monday, with Alderman Wayne Dennis voting no, to closing Lake Storey Beach during the summer except on Fridays through Sundays and holidays.

The city had wanted to close the beach entirely and turn it into a marina, citing declining attendance and revenue, and concerns over e.coli contamination.

But the city's estimated budget for the marina is less than only operating the beach on weekends and holidays. City Community Development Director Roy Parkin says the increased cost is putting staff back in places where they had been cut in the marina proposal.

"What we've proposed in the budget is to continue to operate the water slide, the boat rentals that we have, the concession area as we have it, and the actual swimming area with the lifeguards."

Parkin says that's in addition to food that will now have to be ordered for the concession sand, chlorination for the water and the pool, and sand for the beach.

Several aldermen said all they can hope is that next summer actually feels like summer, and that more people go to Lake Storey Beach.
