| Abingdon Meter Replacement Project Finally Good to Go |
The contractor has been on board for nearly two months, and now the money for a major project in Abingdon is in and the work can begin. The city council in early September hired Morris, Illinois based Professional Meters Inc. to handle the process of replacing around 1,200 aging residential and commercial water meters in the city. The project was contingent on Abingdon being approved for a federal stimulus loan. City engineer Kevan Cooper told the city council Monday night that the waiting game is finally over.
"We received some good news from the EPA concerning the water meter project. The city has been approved finally for the (ARRA) funding for this project," Cooper said. "The $250,000 total price tag on the project, 25% of that money, or $62,500, the city will receive as a grant. They do not have to repay it."
Cooper says the remaining $187,500 will be repaid, interest-free, over 20 years. The city is also starting the process of replacing old fire hydrants. Officials had previously applied for a grant to do that as well but were denied. Mayor Roger Stegall says the first hydrant that was replaced was at Meek and Swartz streets, and the date on it was 1895. The hydrant is being donated to the city's historical society. Stegall says the intent is to replace a few more hydrants by winter and start again in earnest in the spring. In addition, aldermen also voted 5-0 to approve the 2009 tax levy. The levy amount - a little over $255,200 - represents a four percent increase over last year's levy. |
