Budget to be Discussed at Galesburg's City Council Meeting
The Galesburg City Council will discuss one of the last pieces of the puzzle that is the city budget.

Aldermen Monday night will hold a work session prior to the regular council meeting to discuss external agency funding.

The city gives funding to a number of agencies and programs every year, including items like the 4th of July Fireworks Celebration and Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre.

City officials recently suggested that some funding to the Orpheum Theatre could be capped; that's money the theatre gets annually from the city's hotel/motel tax proceeds. Orpheum leaders are said to be displeased with the proposal.

Last year, the city increased external agency funding by 17 percent to a total of $53,000, much less than the agencies themselves wanted.

City officials say the 2011 city budget is now available for public viewing ahead of a final vote on the spending plan.

Aldermen will also decide on the annual property tax levy Monday, one that is $8.1 million, or $385,000 more than last year, but is below the threshold that would require a Truth in Taxation hearing.

The City Council's work session is at 5pm Monday. The regular meeting starts at 6:30, both at City Hall.
