Thanks for Sales Tax Increase, Despite Questions
Officials in the Galesburg School District are sharing thanks for those who helped pass a one-percent increase in the Knox County sales tax in order to pay for education, while some school board members still think what the district's share of the proceeds will pay for needs another look.

The sales tax increase was discussed after all at Monday night's Galesburg School Board meeting. For his part, District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill was appreciative of the committee that pushed for the measure's passage, and some Galesburg High School students who took initiative of their own, including GHS student Sarah Main.

"Sarah and her effort, her partner Tanner Creech -- they're the two behind the Facebook page that was our going viral," Cahill said. "Thank you to our students getting involved in the Democratic process."

But Board Member Robert Lindstrom says the proceeds will only pay for part of an estimated $110 million worth of work outlined in the much-criticized Master Facilities Plan, so looking at the plan still needs to be done.

"I hope they reexamine the plan," Lindstrom said. "Come up with a plan that needs to be done -- nobody disputes that. But, put something together we can afford that we have a pretty good idea we can pay for."

The District-205 Building Committee will meet later this month to start looking at the plan again.
