Expectations for Next Year's Corn Crop
Local and state agriculture officials are already looking ahead to next year's corn crop, even though this year's harvest just got over with.

Rob Elliott of Cameron in Warren County is immediate past president of the Illinois Corn Growers Association. Elliott was asked about the potential that after high yields this year after a bad year the year before, even more farm acres might go to corn next year across the state.

Elliott tells WGIL there certainly is a lot of demand for corn for both ethanol and feed, but farmers are pretty good at figuring it all out.

"I think people are comfortable with where their capability is in growing corn, and I know the fundamental economics are pretty good. At these elevated levels, who knows, demand tends to do funny things but I think all in all most people are confident for next year."

While corn yield estimates have continually been downgraded by the USDA, Elliott says crops this year did very well despite the unusual weather.

That is, he says, except for corn on corn acreage, which he believes farmers should have seen coming.
