Sales Tax Increase in Warren County Needed Now
The Superintendent of the Monmouth-Roseville School District says a sales tax increase could be official in Warren County as soon as next week.

Paul Woehlke told the District-238 Board Tuesday night the Warren County Board is being asked next week to formalize the one percent increase in the county sales tax for education purposes that voters approved last week.

Woehlke told the board part of the reason for the quick increase is because the United School District is looking at needing some of those proceeds sooner rather than later.

"United wants to take advantage of some Build America bonds which are part of the Federal [American Recovery and Reinvestment Act] program that are available until December 31st. And so for them to be able to do that, they really are seeking for the county to take action this month to ensure, confirm that the tax is in place so they can move forward."

United stands to gain an estimated quarter million dollars annually from the proceeds of the sales tax increase, while Monmouth-Roseville could gain nearly $600,000.

Woehlke says his district wants to use a quarter million for current maintenance costs, while using the rest for future facilities projects.
