State Has Help Available for Veterans
(IRN) -- Illinois is home to more than 1 million veterans, and some of them need help.

On this Veterans Day, the 235th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps., veterans' advocates are highlighting the programs in both the public and private sectors that are available when veterans have needs:

* The Illinois Military Family Relief Fund, which allows financial assistance to military families when a family member is deployed overseas. Since its launch in 2003, the program has distributed more than $12 million.
* Helmets to Hardhats, an effort to provide veterans with employment opportunities in the construction industry.
* Operation Support Our Troops, which sends care packages to service members overseas.
* Operation Her Miles allows citizens to donate unused frequent flier miles to that family members can visit injured service personnel at military hospitals.
* The Illinois Warrior Assistance Program is a free, confidential call-in line to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries.
