Prisoner Review Board Member Does Little; Illness Blamed
(IRN) -- A former Illinois corrections director has done little in his 18 months on the Prisoner Review Board.

Roger Walker, the onetime sheriff of Macon County, attended a half-day orientation for the board upon his appointment last year, but has been absent from every meeting since. Walker is on sick leave, with heart, lung and stomach problems. He says he almost died a few times.

Gov. Pat Quinn isn’t sure what to do. "Roger Walker has had some health issues that have been very serious. We want to have a humanitarian approach. At the same time it’s an important board, so that will be reviewed very promptly," the governor said.

The 15-member board considers whether prisoners with indeterminate sentences should be released, and it makes recommendations to the governor on clemency petitions. Quinn says the board is able to function without Walker.

The job is considered full-time, with several meetings a week, either in Springfield, Chicago or at prison locations throughout the state. It pays $85,886 a year.
