Abingdon School Property Tax Levy Approved
How much money the Abingdon School district is asking for in property tax dollars isn't being questioned, but just how much the property tax levy rate will be is.

The District-217 Board Wednesday night approved a property tax levy request for 2011 of about $2.2 million. Superintendent Tami Roskamp says the lower levy amount is because not as much money is needed in some funds, while reserve dollars will cover overs.

But Roskamp says just what the levy rate will be per $100 of assessed value is a different of opinion, depending on what you believe property values will do.

"The number I got most recently from the County Clerk, he thought [Equalized Assessed Value] was going to decrease; we think we're going to have a one-percent increase," Roskamp said. "If there was no increase [the levy rate would be] about $5.70. If we would get a big increase, it could go as low as $5.56. But I'm guessing it's going to be about $5.70."

No matter how you slice it, Roskamp says that's significantly lower than previous years. Roskamp was asked if the levy could be decreased even lower given the passage last week of the one-percent sales tax increases in Knox and Warren Counties. She says not yet, because it's better to have the proceeds in hand first.

The District-217 board Wednesday night also voted 5-2 to approve nine early graduation requests, a number higher than previous years. Board president Jim Bloomberg and member Jeff Emerick both voted "no."
