Harvest Progress Nearly Done, but with Smaller Yields than Expected
(IRN)-The corn and soybean harvests in Illinois are still in the running to set at least a recent record for earliest completion. But farmers aren't nearly as concerned about timing as they are with yields.

Brad Schwab, USDA crop statistician, says the corn harvest is at 98 percent complete, compared to last year's 18 percent at this time and the 71 percent five year average. The soybean harvest is at 99 percent complete, compared to last year's 35 percent and the 81 percent five year average. The sorghum harvest is now at 93 percent, compared to 32 percent last year and the 69 percent five year average.

The recent weather is only causing problems for the winter wheat crop, and mostly in Southern Illinois. Schwab explains that the lack of moisture is keeping the wheat from sprouting.

When it comes to yields, Schwab says the average bean yield could set a new record in Illinois, while the corn yield is down, which means lower income. He says the crop yield estimates have been reduced twice this year for the state’s corn crop.
