Sales Tax Increase Victory for Abingdon Schools
The way members of the Abingdon School Board see it, they're going to be in the best financial position now that the one-percent sales tax increase has been passed by Knox County voters.

That was an item discussed at Wednesday night's District 217 Board meeting.

Board member Sherry Lomax says while not every voter she knows actually voted in favor of the increase which can only pay for construction-related projects, most like what the district will do with the proceeds.

"I've heard good comments from the general population that said that our district is the one that is using the money the way it should be," Lomax said.

Board president Jim Bloomberg says he feels the same way, especially after he had some explaining to do with some voters.

"After I explained what we were doing, they were happy," Bloomberg said. "They didn't understand; they thought we were going to build something. I said, 'No, We're going to try to pay our [construction and improvement-related] bonds down,'"

The District is looking to potentially abate bonds on past construction projects with their share of the proceeds.

The district expects to also receive a small amount of money from the sales tax increase also passed in Warren County, based on the residences of some students.
