Purple Heart Recipient Headlines Springfield Veterans Day Service
(IRN) -- An Army veteran, who served Thursday as master of ceremonies at a Veterans Day ceremony, says he's touched to see a crowd before him and to hear how many people turned out for services for two Illinois soldiers killed in action this week.

E7 Sgt. 1st Class Michael Hartman of Chatham served 21 years in the Army, including 18 months in Iraq, and recently retired. He's now attending classes at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, and was tapped to lay the wreath, covered in red, white and blue flowers, at the base of the flags outside the college’s main building.

About 75 people gathered for the ceremony. Hartman says members of the military give "selfless service," but deserve thanks for their commitment. "Somewhere in the distant land, the War on Terror goes on. Let us not forget those who are still in harm's way."

Hartman, who was injured in the military, earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
