Guard Members May Nominate Employers for Award
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Federal officials are encouraging National Guard and Reserve members and their families to nominate supportive bosses for the Defense Department's top award to employers.

Winners of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award will be announced in the spring and honored at a Washington, D.C. ceremony next fall.

The award is sponsored by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Defense Department agency. It recognizes employers who provide "exceptional support of military employees above federal law requirements."

Guard and Reserve members comprise nearly half of the U.S. military. Winners of the award in 2010 included CEOs of seven large corporations, a governor, mayor and state police director, the chancellor of a university and four small business owners.
