Senate Seat Up for Grabs in IL
(IRN)-Voters in Illinois are choosing candidates to fill President Barack Obama's old Senate seat. The race between Republican Congressman Mark Kirk and Democratic state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias is very close and is being closely watched not only by the White House but also by Republicans who would especially like to have this seat in their column.

Both candidates flew around the state Monday, stopping in several Illinois cities in a last attempt to win over voters and to encourage them to vote today.

In addition to Tuesday's battle for the six year Senate term, there is also a special Senate Election to fill the remaining days of what was the Obama Senate seat. It's expected the candidate who wins the six year term will also win the Special Election but not necessarily.

That individual must be certified by Illinois election officials by November 24th and could take his seat in Washington at the time.

U.S. Senator Roland Burris, who is not on the ballot in Tuesday's Special Election, would step down, leaving the post earlier than he had initially expected.
