Galesburg School Board Adopts Tentative Tax Levy
Officials with the Galesburg School District said they would provide property tax relief if the one-percent increase in the Knox County sales tax was passed, and now they're poised to deliver.

The District-205 Board this week approved a tentative levy amount for 2011 of $16.3 million -- exactly the same as they requested this year -- with a final vote coming in December.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill says he admits he assumed the sales tax increase would be successful.

"We did not levy for Fire Prevention and Safety, in large part, because of the passage of the penny tax, in anticipation of it," Cahill said. "We were thinking positively that Tuesday when we presented it to the Board's Budget Committee. We, obviously, could have come back and reallocated to that particular levy."

Cahill says the identical levy request, combined with property values that have virtually unchanged, mean that a property tax bill for a home valued at $100,000 will decrease by about $5.

Cahill says while fire prevention and working cash levies were zeroed out, tort and retirement fund levies had to go up dramatically.
