New Recommendations for Nutrition at Day Care Centers
(IRN) -- A new report says that day care programs need tighter definitions about nutrition. The Institute of Medicine has issued recommendations that say that day cares with a federally supported food program need to provide more vegetables and fruits and less fat, salt and added sugars.

Roxanne Ramage, the registered dietician to the State Board of Education, says some programs are already incorporating the principles of this report. She says examples of the recommendations are more dark green, leafy vegetables, more orange vegetables, fewer starchy vegetables, and more fruits that aren't juice.

She says the recommendations for a similar report for schools are included in a bill before congress, but says the U.S. Department of Agriculture needs to decide how it wants to proceed with the day care nutrition recommendations. Nationwide, in fiscal year 2010, this program provided meals and snacks to about three million children, and 114,000 adults with disabilities and other adults over age 60.
